Smoke Controlled Area

A Smoke Controlled Area (also called a Smoke Controlled Zone) is a legally designated region in the UK where restrictions are placed on the release of smoke from chimneys primarily to improve air quality and reduce pollution.

What It Means for Residents – If you live in one of these areas:

  • Only Authorised Smokeless Fuels carrying the Ready To Burn Logo are allowed to be burnt in any appliance in a smoked controlled area. Wood is not classed as an Authorised Fuel.
  • Ready To Burn wood can only be burnt on an exempt appliance (Approved by Defra). Exempt appliances are usually stoves which burn wood and depending on the model can burn also Authorised Smokeless Fuel.
  • Burning unauthorised fuels can result in a fine from your local authority.
